Based on the true story of Civil War hero Sarah Edmonds, who enlisted in the Union Army as Frank Thompson, this is one story so full of incredible twists and turns that readers will be compelled have to finish it just to find out what happens.In this novel, Moss returns to explore in greater depth Sarah Edmonds' life, which she portrayed in the lively 2011 picture book biography Nurse, Soldier, Spy. When we meet Sarah at the opening of this novel, it's the spring of 1861, and she has been living as Frank Thompson, a traveling book salesman, for more than three years. Writing in the first person, Sarah fills the reader in on her back story growing up on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada, with a cruel and abusive father; when her father is about to force her into an unwanted marriage, Sarah cuts her hair, dresses as a boy, and runs away, ending up in the United States.But when the war breaks out, the teenaged Sarah wants to be a part of history, and enlists in the Union Army as Private Frank Thompson, Army nurse. An accomplished shot and rider, she is especially skilled at hiding her female parts when she "does her business," and no one questions her sex or her ability as a soldier. Moss does an excellent job portraying the tedium and occasional terror of a soldier's existence through Sarah's eyes, as she wonders if she will be able to measure up in battle. When the Union loses the first Battle of Bull Run, Sarah/Frank no longer needs to wonder; she's running around helping the doctors amputate limbs, writing letters to loved ones, and carrying out the last wishes of dying soldiers, as the reader gets a close-up view of the primitive nature of medical care in the 19th century.But of course Sarah is a woman, and living in close proximity with so many eligible young men, the inevitable happens--she develops romantic feelings for a fellow soldier, fantasizing about him. Eventually her feelings are so strong, she asks for a reassignment, next serving as a postmaster delivering letters to the troops. Soon she is recruited as a Union spy, where her skill at disguises comes in very handy. She even "disguises" herself as a woman for one of her assignments!While there are hundreds of documented cases of women disguising themselves as men to fight in the Civil War, Sarah was the only woman to be recognized by Congress as an honorably discharged soldier, with rights to back pay and pension, and the only woman allowed to join the association for Civil War veterans. At her death she was granted a military funeral and buried in a cemetery for Civil War veterans.Moss' well-researched novel is based in part on Sarah Edmonds' own memoir, as well as many other sources on women in the Civil War and the Civil War in general. Moss includes extensive back matter, including background on Sarah Edmonds, brief biographies of Union Army officers, a brief Civil War timeline, which includes annotations for battles in which Frank/Sarah participated, and selected bibliography.This is a terrific novel for middle schoolers or high schoolers, male or female. My wife enjoys reading about "petticoat soldiers" (women who posed as men to serve in the Civil War). Told in the first person, this book is historical fiction, in the genre of James Michener. The characters - including the main - are real, but the dialog and fine details of the story are fiction.Enjoy!

Wow! It has everything: mystery, murder, spies, and romance all cleverly intertwined into a great read. You cannot go wrong getting this book. In fact, I'm giving a copy as a gift.

Another Ron Rhodes masterpieces. Ron Rhodes is a fantastic Bible Scholar who I've listened to on KTIS radio two hours a month on "Live the Promise". He's an exceptional scholar and his books are filled with information and answers.

A well written book aimed at Christians. The title intrigued me, so I bought the book.I'm sorry, but the objections the author talks about are not really points atheists bring up. The arguments presented wouldn't change an atheist's or skeptics mind either.Other reviews go more into specific examples of this.The book is written to make the reader feel armed with intelligent arguments in favor of Christian beliefs. I think it serves that purpose well.But talk to a real critical thinker? Every argument presented is easily picked apart. I will say this though, in Bible studies? The author has some insights to add.But trying to convince a scientist that his science is wrong? These aren't the methods. And no critical thinker I know would bring up the "Objections" that the author answers. Lots of straw man objections that are easily overcome using no logic at all.But for the aright audience? Convincing.

I am reading through this book at this time. So far its a well presented defense of Christianity and its major doctrines. The book contains charts which are laid out well in the chapters they are used. Any serious atheist/skeptic should give this one a read, and those in dialogue with them should consult this book for its useful question/objection and answer format reads well for dialogues. The only major gripe I have (as I do with all Ron Rhodes books) is the lack of a helpful topical scripture and index which would make looking up terms much easier. Contrary to the views of some people these are still used in books despite e-books. Many of John MacArthur's books for example contain scripture and topical indexes. Also I expect most of the negative reviews to be from atheists/skeptics.

This is not a book of Christian apologetics at all. Rather, it is a basic and at all not comprehensive compendium of popular Christian thought. Rhodes has really no arguments to defend his points. Like many apologetic Christians (and atheists, for that matter) he limits himself to stating the points in a way you would hear at Bible study groups or in Sunday school. The few justifications he has, for example against evolution, are a joke, along the lines of the old creationist mantra, "what good is half a wing?"I bought this book expecting some sort of philosophical or even theological discourse on "the objections of atheists, agnostics, and skeptics," but it's merely a propagandistic book of Christian-like indoctrination (complete with invitation to prayer and 1-800 prayer hotline... yeah) that has no bearing whatsoever on the constructive dialogue that some Christians and some atheists/agnostics/skeptics wish to start with each other.I recommend, instead, "Mere Christianity" and "A Layman's Introduction to Christian Thought." I disagree with the content of both, but they are at least sound and very well thought-out and written.

Rhodes answers objections made by non-believers. He is easily understood; makes sure his point gets across. Important and outstanding work; there should be no excuse; he gives us strong, undeniable evidence for the existence of God, Savior, Holy Spirit, and the inerrancy of the bible. Ron quotes a variety of individuals who were influential throughout time. Apologetics: gaining the faith and strength one needs to share the truth. Excellent bibliography for further study recourses.Ron explains how similar atheists, agnostics, and skeptics really are: the origins, history, beliefs, religion of fear, the illogical position. Agnostics: cant know or not sure; unknowable; if he believes this He can not entirely be unknowable. Skeptic: he is not skeptical, his worldview of skepticism is correct."The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'."Good accompaniments: "Darwin's Black Box", "In the Minds of Men", "Mere Christianity"Wish you wellScott

A classic and a favorite of mine growing up, now trying to read it to my 3 year old twins, they're not too receptive to it yet but I think very soon they will be. Definitely go for the hardcover version, just wish the corners were a little less 'sharp,' we didn't leave the books out when the kids were younger to be safe.

I purchased this book (as well as all of the other Dr. Seuss books) as soon as they became available for the Kindle. It helped that there was a great promotional price at the time but the real motivator was to have them for my, at that time, infant grandson to read.Fast forward a couple of years and I realized that while the Kindle version is great to have (especially when on-the-go), nothing really replaces having the actual book in hand for a toddler. My grandson is now almost three years old and can handle the delicate process of turning thin, paper pages. He loves to sit and “read” books to himself or to his baby sister. Because of this new realization, I have decided to pick up the books in this series in hardback format.“Green Eggs and Ham” is one of the wonderful books I remember from my own childhood and I love the book's rhymes and illustrations. It was one of the Dr. Seuss books that I purchased and read to my children when they were young. We still have those old books but I gave them to my daughters when they moved away from home so they could keep an important piece of their childhood with them. I now get to have the opportunity to buy them again and enjoy reading them to a new generation.

I was hesitant to buy this book (that I love) because of so many negative reviews regarding paper quality. I actually removed it from my cart and then went to a book store to see the quality for myself. Yes, it is true that you can see some of the impressions of the previous page through the current page. However, I did not find it distracting in any way. I did not think it was a sign of poor paper quality. I thought the quality of the book felt as good as the one I had as a child. Because the images contain a lot of black lines and dark green ham :), I think it is inevitable that some of these lines will show through. Please, still consider buying this book. Please, still consider buying any/all Dr. Seuss books. I am so glad I bought this despite the reviews on paper quality. My husband read it before I wrapped it as a gift. He loved it and had no issues either!

Who DOESN'T love Green Eggs and Ham? Heck, even mister Grouch Guy liked Green Eggs and Ham after the story was over! You do not like them, so you say, try them, try them, and you may! He would eat them with a goat, he would eat them on a boat! In the rain, in the dark, on a train, in a car and in a tree, they are so good so good you see! He would eat them in a box, he would eat them with a fox. He would eat them in a house, with a mouse! He would eat them here or there, he would eat them ANYWHERE! He does he does so like green eggs and ham, he does he likes them, thank you thank you, Sam I Am!Beginning readers love this book for it's simple words fun story, and silly (but sneakily educational) simplistic didactic rhythm of the poem, which helps young readers to learn and remember (ask yourself why you still remember the words to this book after so many years!). Additionally, it enforces the lesson to TRY something, even if it looks weird, you may like them! You cannot say you don't like something until you have tried it!

This is the greatest story ever written. The doctor should have been hyped to Dr. Suess PhD, DDS, MD OvLuv because the man can spin a tail that brings tears to the most masculine of eyes. If you are into that whole men need to be tough thing. During my life, people have tried to argue for other books in the Seuss library, but those folks are wrong. Opinion does not even play a part.Stanford University did a study on the perfect combinations of words and then applied the equation to every book ever written. Green Eggs and Ham came out with the highest score. In fact, the second place score was 50% of the GEaH score. Don't bother looking it up because there are RFbF (Red Fish blue Fish) members that have infiltrated the librarian society and erased all of the evidence.It's a damn shame when people are still trying to deny the WORD. They have created songs to distract you telling you that the bird is in fact the word. Well it isn't the word, Kyle!

It is my favorite children's book. I bought it for my grandchildren and look forward to reading it to them. I want them to grow up enjoying the feel of a book; the sound and the motion of turning each page. It is a sensory delight that should be indelibly imprinted into their memories as was mine. A gift of togetherness and love they can share with the young ones that come into their lives in years to come.You can't beat Seuss, but you can add Shel Silverstein & Graeme Base to your collection too!Good price.Hardback slick surface makes it easy to wipe clean.

I got this for my little brother, wanting him to read the books his older siblings used to read as children, and this edition is so cute! They're CUTOUTS that show you different parts of the pages and it's just the most brilliant thing. Not only does it keep his attention, it lets him help me when I'm reading; he loves pulling the pages apart to let me read the next passage. I really like this.

This book was to start my newest grandson on the Suess books for Christmas. All my grand children have all the Dr Seuss books and they are all gifted children. The supplier was very good about packaging and sending it out promptly. I recommend them to anyone. The Seuss books are Classics and despite what the politically ignorant Librarian said about them they are Classic books that stimulate the mind and imagination which i feel is why they have been around so many years and are still doing their magic on our bright young minds.

Make sure you have a big screen for this one, because the images aren't scalable. its basically the same picture you'd get if you opened the book flat, and took a picture from above. you can click on the words to make them bigger, but the picture on a phone isn't that great because its so small. On a tablet, though, its much better.
