About the Author

Dr. Thomas Lillesand is a professor of engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has received the Alan Gordon Memorial Award from American Society of Photogrammetry for significant achievements in remote sensing and photographic interpretation as well as the Earle J. Fennell Award from the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and is on the academic board for the John C. Stennis Space Center. Dr. Lillesand has published over 125 works on remote sensing and his research interests include geographical information systems, natural resource management, and environmental monitoring.

There's a bit too much "scientific" jargon in this book. Great figures, just too much jargon. I've read other remote sensing books, and they are read better.

It's a fine book, but for a text on the subject it's a bit outdated. Scant information on LiDAR, or the newest sensors.

This is a great resource for any GIS practitioner. It's well written and informative.

Extremely useful to me in my job

This book is so overpriced for what it is (a paperback book).

Easy to read. Valuable information. I rented it, but wish I bought it so I could keep it.

This has been my standard text for many years, but there are many others of similar quality available at a lower cost. Most of the chapter on terrain analysis is no longer very relevant and new tachnologies such as LiDAR and hyperspectral deserve more treatment.

About the Author 'The Physicist' is F Todd Baker. He received AB and MA degrees from Miami University and a PhD degree from the University of Michigan. His area of research is nuclear physics and he has published more than 70 articles in refereed journals as well as made numerous presentations at conferences and workshops. He has more than 35 years of college and university teaching experience. In 2006 he retired from the University of Georgia where he taught and performed nuclear physics research for 32 years. Previously he held a postdoctoral research associate position at Rutgers University and teaching positions at Carroll College (Wisconsin) and St Lawrence University. He now lives in Athens, Georgia with his wife Sara in a 100-year-old house mainly restored by him and decorated and landscaped by her. He has four beloved children aged 18-45 years. He enjoys bicycling around town, playing violin, cooking and baking, outdoor activities, DIY projects, film, music of many genres, working puzzles, reading mainly European murder mysteries, and hanging out in coffee houses.

However, it's not every historical fiction title that can be justly called a "thriller." With A Soldier's Secret, Marissa Moss definitely joins the club of historical thriller writers for teens. Based on the true story of Civil War hero Sarah Edmonds, who enlisted in the Union Army as Frank Thompson, this is one story so full of incredible twists and turns that readers will be compelled have to finish it just to find out what happens.In this novel, Moss returns to explore in greater depth Sarah Edmonds' life, which she portrayed in the lively 2011 picture book biography Nurse, Soldier, Spy. When we meet Sarah at the opening of this novel, it's the spring of 1861, and she has been living as Frank Thompson, a traveling book salesman, for more than three years. Writing in the first person, Sarah fills the reader in on her back story growing up on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada, with a cruel and abusive father; when her father is about to force her into an unwanted marriage, Sarah cuts her hair, dresses as a boy, and runs away, ending up in the United States.But when the war breaks out, the teenaged Sarah wants to be a part of history, and enlists in the Union Army as Private Frank Thompson, Army nurse. An accomplished shot and rider, she is especially skilled at hiding her female parts when she "does her business," and no one questions her sex or her ability as a soldier. Moss does an excellent job portraying the tedium and occasional terror of a soldier's existence through Sarah's eyes, as she wonders if she will be able to measure up in battle. When the Union loses the first Battle of Bull Run, Sarah/Frank no longer needs to wonder; she's running around helping the doctors amputate limbs, writing letters to loved ones, and carrying out the last wishes of dying soldiers, as the reader gets a close-up view of the primitive nature of medical care in the 19th century.But of course Sarah is a woman, and living in close proximity with so many eligible young men, the inevitable happens--she develops romantic feelings for a fellow soldier, fantasizing about him. Eventually her feelings are so strong, she asks for a reassignment, next serving as a postmaster delivering letters to the troops. Soon she is recruited as a Union spy, where her skill at disguises comes in very handy. She even "disguises" herself as a woman for one of her assignments!While there are hundreds of documented cases of women disguising themselves as men to fight in the Civil War, Sarah was the only woman to be recognized by Congress as an honorably discharged soldier, with rights to back pay and pension, and the only woman allowed to join the association for Civil War veterans. At her death she was granted a military funeral and buried in a cemetery for Civil War veterans.Moss' well-researched novel is based in part on Sarah Edmonds' own memoir, as well as many other sources on women in the Civil War and the Civil War in general. Moss includes extensive back matter, including background on Sarah Edmonds, brief biographies of Union Army officers, a brief Civil War timeline, which includes annotations for battles in which Frank/Sarah participated, and selected bibliography.This is a terrific novel for middle schoolers or high schoolers, male or female. It offers great action, suspense, twists, and star-crossed romance that should intrigue even reluctant readers of historical fiction.

My wife enjoys reading about "petticoat soldiers" (women who posed as men to serve in the Civil War). Told in the first person, this book is historical fiction, in the genre of James Michener. The characters - including the main - are real, but the dialog and fine details of the story are fiction.Enjoy!

Another Ron Rhodes masterpieces. Ron Rhodes is a fantastic Bible Scholar who I've listened to on KTIS radio two hours a month on "Live the Promise". He's an exceptional scholar and his books are filled with information and answers.

A well written book aimed at Christians. The title intrigued me, so I bought the book.I'm sorry, but the objections the author talks about are not really points atheists bring up. The arguments presented wouldn't change an atheist's or skeptics mind either.Other reviews go more into specific examples of this.The book is written to make the reader feel armed with intelligent arguments in favor of Christian beliefs. I think it serves that purpose well.But talk to a real critical thinker? Every argument presented is easily picked apart. I will say this though, in Bible studies? The author has some insights to add.But trying to convince a scientist that his science is wrong? These aren't the methods. And no critical thinker I know would bring up the "Objections" that the author answers. Lots of straw man objections that are easily overcome using no logic at all.But for the aright audience? Convincing.

I am reading through this book at this time. So far its a well presented defense of Christianity and its major doctrines. The book contains charts which are laid out well in the chapters they are used. Any serious atheist/skeptic should give this one a read, and those in dialogue with them should consult this book for its useful question/objection and answer format reads well for dialogues. The only major gripe I have (as I do with all Ron Rhodes books) is the lack of a helpful topical scripture and index which would make looking up terms much easier. Contrary to the views of some people these are still used in books despite e-books. Many of John MacArthur's books for example contain scripture and topical indexes. Also I expect most of the negative reviews to be from atheists/skeptics.

This is not a book of Christian apologetics at all. Rather, it is a basic and at all not comprehensive compendium of popular Christian thought. Rhodes has really no arguments to defend his points. Like many apologetic Christians (and atheists, for that matter) he limits himself to stating the points in a way you would hear at Bible study groups or in Sunday school. The few justifications he has, for example against evolution, are a joke, along the lines of the old creationist mantra, "what good is half a wing?"I bought this book expecting some sort of philosophical or even theological discourse on "the objections of atheists, agnostics, and skeptics," but it's merely a propagandistic book of Christian-like indoctrination (complete with invitation to prayer and 1-800 prayer hotline... yeah) that has no bearing whatsoever on the constructive dialogue that some Christians and some atheists/agnostics/skeptics wish to start with each other.I recommend, instead, "Mere Christianity" and "A Layman's Introduction to Christian Thought." I disagree with the content of both, but they are at least sound and very well thought-out and written.

Rhodes answers objections made by non-believers. He is easily understood; makes sure his point gets across. Important and outstanding work; there should be no excuse; he gives us strong, undeniable evidence for the existence of God, Savior, Holy Spirit, and the inerrancy of the bible. Ron quotes a variety of individuals who were influential throughout time. Apologetics: gaining the faith and strength one needs to share the truth. Excellent bibliography for further study recourses.Ron explains how similar atheists, agnostics, and skeptics really are: the origins, history, beliefs, religion of fear, the illogical position. Agnostics: cant know or not sure; unknowable; if he believes this He can not entirely be unknowable.
